How to Build a Loyal Team of Caregivers

It is hard enough to find people to provide care who you can trust and who understand your needs. It can be even harder to keep those good caregivers on your team once you find them.

With the current shortage of caregivers, we are in a crisis. According to the ANCOR 2024 survey, 90% of people said they experienced moderate or severe staffing challenges in the past year. Pay and benefits for workers can be too low due to a lack of funding for Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS). This can lead to caregivers taking higher-paying jobs.

Here are some of our tips on how to find, and keep, the best workers.

Hire the Right People the First Time

You may be desperate for help. It may be tempting to hire the first person you find. Hiring a candidate who isn’t the right fit might get you through for now. But, if they don’t work out, you’ll be right back where you started.

How Do You Know if They’re the Right Fit?

You can teach them how to do the tasks you need, like bathing and giving medication. But who are they at their core? Are they kind, empathetic, and patient? These soft skills can’t be taught.

Encourage Ongoing Training for Caregivers

Dementia care or stress management may not be required for your care. But if your worker is wanting to learn a new skill, cheer them on! Caregivers can receive certifications on various caregiving skills. This may help them feel empowered and more confident when caring for you. It is also nice to be supported by the people around you when learning something new. Plus, their new knowledge may come in handy as your care needs change over time.

Create a Good Work Environment

Nobody wants to work a job where they don’t feel appreciated. By allowing for open communication and welcoming feedback, workers will feel supported. But, just listening to your workers isn’t enough. Don’t forget to take their feedback to heart and consider making changes if needed.

When the Dream Team of Caregivers is Assembled

Anyone can be a boss. But, being a good boss requires a bit more effort. However, this pays off in the long run. When you are supported by people who know you best, and care for you effectively, everyone is happy.
